DATA MANAGEMENT

Content Management or CMS?

At the very beginning of the internet era, a website was composed by a set of files in a directory containing data that were accessed by browser along the internet. All the data were encoded directly in the files, and the browser was able to understand a few set of basic commands in order to display that pages to the end-user.

During the last 30 years, the technological revolution brought directly into our house at least one computer, and recently on mobile devices. With the internet people growing month after month, computers and servers rapidly doubled their capacities to elaborate and store data.

New technologies have been introduced such as databases like MySQL, Postgre SQL and even Oracle, in order to support servers to host more content from websites.

That was the beginning of the Content Management Systems era, that dramatically simplify the life of the website designer and developer.

The main reason for this, is that in a Content Management System (CMS) all the information is stored in a database, instead of a standalone webpage. This information is called at the same time that a user requires a certain page, reducing the effort for developers to release tons of pages for a website.

Today a wide variety of CMS are available to download, such as WordPress, Joomla, Magento, Drupal or Prestashop, to give everyone the possibility to build and manage a website.

The invention of CMS, changed the way in which people manages the information in a website. Today from a single central application, a web admin can manage the behavior of an entire website, with no need to write code into pages.
